Communication Skills: Hire the Better Writer

I am a big fan of 37 Signals products. We use their Basecamp product to collaborate with our clients for all business writing training projects. We chose it because it is clean and simple, with the functionality we need and no clutter. In short, it encourages easy communication flow. Just like good business writing should.

Jason Fried, the founder and CEO of 37 Signals, recently published Rework, which contains his recommendations to succeed in business.

Number 2 on their list is: Hire The Better Writer

If you are trying to decide among a few people to fill a position, hire the best writer. It doesn’t matter if that person is a marketer, salesperson, designer, programmer, or whatever; their writing skills will pay off.

That’s because being a good writer is about more than writing. Clear writing is a sign of clear thinking. Great writers know how to communicate. They make things easy to understand. They can put themselves in someone else’s shoes. They know what to omit. And those are qualities you want in any candidate.

Writing is making a comeback, all over our society. Look at how much people email and text message now rather than talk on the phone. Look at how much communication happens via instant messaging and blogging. Writing is today’s currency for good ideas.

If you want to improve your career prospects, improve your business writing.

Hi mary

I would like to argue your point on writing. Although I agree on the fact that writing is indeed necessary for effective communication, but spoken skills are equally necessary. Do you think written communication is equivalent to oral communication when it comes to expressions and feelings??

Hi Nikhil,
Thanks for your wise insight. Both verbal and written skills are equally necessary. Peter Drucker wisely stated, “As soon as you put one foot on the career ladder, your success depends on your ability to communicate clearly. The presentation, the memo, the proposal, are the basic tools needed for success.” This reflects both verbal and written communication.

So much of business flow is conveyed in writing: proposals, email, sales documents, contracts, websites. It’s necessary that one can convey expressions and feeling in writing, as well as verbally. You are correct that sometimes it is best to talk, instead of write, (for example, in a heated email) but clear writing is a requisite skill for all business people, along with clear speech.
