U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Technical Writing Training for White Papers

Technical White Papers for Publication Training

CHALLENGES

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, employs engineers, scientists, and technicians across seven research laboratories. While technically excellent, many struggled to translate their expertise into publishable papers and technical reports — the documents their careers demand.

Advancement to senior positions requires published work. Acceptance into doctoral programs requires publication records.

Engineers who cannot write clearly enough to publish face a direct career bottleneck, not because of their technical ability, but because of their writing.

Documents include white papers for publication and technical manuals for military and civilian users.

SOLUTIONS

Instructional Solutions delivered a customized, live, virtual, instructor-led course for engineers, computer scientists, and technicians across all seven laboratories, focused on white papers and technical reports rather than generic business writing.

The foundation of the training was our Technical Report Writing course, heavily customized for ERDC.

Participants learned a six-step writing framework, audience-focused planning, and editing for clarity, applied directly to their own white papers intended for publication. The curriculum was designed for highly educated, technical experts who struggle with writing not for lack of intelligence, but for lack of a structured process.

OUTCOMES

Engineers moved from adequate to skilled

Before training, 87% of participants rated their technical writing as "adequate. " After training, 87% rated themselves as having "major skill. " Zero participants rated themselves as beginners after the course, directly addressing the publication bottleneck blocking career advancement.

Writing time savings that free research capacity

~70% of participants expect to save 30% or more of their writing time using the six-step structured process, freeing capacity for high-value technical and research work.

Participant testimonials

"The planning part was the "ah ha" moment for me. I tend to jump into drafting while editing, and no wonder it takes me forever to write!"

"This covered topics I had not learned in college, graduate courses, or other trainings. I will recommend it to my branch chief."

"I now have the tools to confidently communicate with my team, supervisors, and mentees."
