Getting Started: Set your goals

Meet your instructor, describe the policies you write or maintain, and share your specific writing challenges. You set a personal benchmark that shapes every piece of feedback you receive.

Foundation
01
Lesson 1: A repeatable six-step policy writing process
Learn the proven framework that works for every policy you write, from a single workplace policy to a full policy manual. It reduces writing time by 25% or more and produces policies that are complete, consistent, and easy to follow.
Process
02
Lesson 2: Plan around your readers and stakeholders
Define who must follow, enforce, approve, and audit the policy before you write a word. Identify the regulatory, legal, and organizational requirements the policy must meet. Practice exercise: reader analysis for your policy, with detailed instructor feedback.
Process
03
Lesson 3: Structure a policy readers can navigate
Learn the standard sections of an effective policy and how to sequence them: purpose, scope, policy statement, definitions, roles and responsibilities, and compliance. Use templates without letting them dictate your content.
Process
04
Lesson 4: Write a clear purpose, scope, and policy statement
Write the opening sections that tell readers why the policy exists, who and what it covers, and exactly what is required. This is where most policies succeed or fail. Practice exercise: your policy's content and organization, with detailed instructor feedback.
Application
05
Lesson 5: Definitions, roles, and compliance
Define key terms so every reader interprets them the same way. Assign clear responsibilities and write the compliance, exception, and enforcement sections that ensure a policy stands up to review and audit.
Application
06
Lesson 6: Policies and procedures that work together
Understand the difference between a policy and a procedure, and how each supports the other. Learn to write a policy that procedures can carry out, and keep policies and procedures aligned as either one changes.
Application
07
Lesson 7: Policy examples, manuals, and AI
Review effective policies across common types, including HR, IT and data security, compliance, and environmental policies. Learn to organize a policy and procedure manual, manage review and version control, and use AI tools when, if, and how they help.
Application
08
Lesson 8: Precise, unambiguous language
Choose mandatory and permissive language deliberately, such as "must," "should," and "may," so no requirement is open to interpretation. Replace legalese and jargon with plain language, and write in the active voice.
Polish
09
Lesson 9: An authoritative, respectful tone
Write with a tone that is firm without being punitive and neutral without being vague. Use inclusive language that applies fairly to everyone the policy covers.
Polish
10
Lesson 10: Grammar, consistency, and live coaching
Receive a personal grammar diagnosis and proofreading strategies for policy documents, including consistent use of defined terms. Self-paced participants finish with a live one-on-one coaching session on the policy they wrote. Group courses include individual written instructor feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions About Policy Writing Training

Effective policy writing states exactly what is required, who it applies to, and why, in language every reader interprets the same way. It depends on knowing your readers, structuring the policy so it is easy to navigate, and choosing precise words. This course teaches a repeatable process for doing that in every policy you write.

Yes. The self-paced online course is a practicum: you plan, draft, and edit an actual policy from your work, receive two rounds of written instructor feedback, and finish with a live one-on-one coaching session.

Yes. Our policy and procedure writing training, virtual or onsite, is built around your organization's actual policies, regulatory environment, and standards. We can customize our existing curriculum, combine multiple courses, or develop a new course.

The course covers the policies you write at work. Typical examples include HR and workplace policies, IT and data security policies, compliance policies, environmental policies, and complete policy and procedure manuals.

A policy states what is required and why. A standard operating procedure explains step by step how to carry out a task. This course focuses on writing policies and keeping them aligned with procedures. The SOP Writing Course focuses on writing the procedures themselves.

The self-paced course ends with a live, one-on-one session with your instructor to review the policy you planned, drafted, and edited in the course. You get structured feedback on clarity, structure, and language, and you leave with a polished policy.

The self-paced course requires about 8 hours of total time, across two months of access time to your course and instructor. Live group training requires about 7.5 hours of instruction time, but can be customized and condensed and delivered incrementally.

Group training accommodates teams of any size. We cap each group at 18 participants to keep the training highly interactive, and we can run multiple cohorts for larger organizations. Volume discounts apply.

No prior writing training is required. The course works for professionals at every level, from those writing their first policy to managers responsible for an entire policy manual.

Yes. You receive a personalized certificate of completion that you can share on LinkedIn, print, or list on your résumé.
